How to Make a Slab of Clay with No Slab Roller

Welcome! Today we are going to talk about throwing Out slabs!

Now some people think you have to have a slab roller to get good, consistent slabs, but that is not the case. I'm going to show you how to throw it out. It's going to be a little bit loud at first. Cause I don't have anything on this plywood, but you just take a hunk of clay and you smack it down.

You're smacking it down flat and you're also kind of rolling it out. Like I'm throwing it this way and the way I throw it, it's going to keep extending in that. Look at the shape of it right now. Okay. See, it's about maybe three eights of an inch right now.

Now what I like to do when I get to this desired thickness is I put it on these cloths table napkins that my mother-in-law gave me when she didn't want them anymore.

And I will roll it out from there. So I have this rolling pin that has different increments of sizes. This is about a fourth of an inch, but you can also do the same thing with just two pieces of wood that are the same size on either side and you just roll it out and then you flip it over. I'm going to use this one. Cause I like, cause I like this one so much. I can feel that I'll flip it over. Might go this way just to get it all pulling out in different directions. Now I got to kind of watch the little crinkles on this sometimes, but so I used a little bit too much clay here or this size, but let's just see what you've got here.

So I'm going to do that. If you want to get an extra, you know, got a little bit extra here, cut that off. If you want to get it really smooth. This is for cake decorating, but any little flat piece of plastic can get it real smooth. I don't know if you can try to zoom in here and see if you can see, but just get a really great surface on there.

And then this can become Christmas ornaments. It can become coasters. It can become magnets. It can begin plates on a hump mold or in a slump, mold a bowl. Let's see how I did here on the thickness. Let's see, you can see right here, the thickness and it looks pretty consistent to me.

You guys be the judge, but that is how you throw out a slab. Now I made probably a thousand Christmas ornaments last season and I used all, this is just all we did. Boom, boom, boom, boom, no slab roller this year. I might get a slab roller, but we'll see. Okay. Thanks for watching.
